Dowager Queen of
Menu dated 22nd May 1910
Dinner at Buckingham Palace hosted by Her Majesty the Dowager Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom for the funeral of her husband, His Late Majesty King Edward VII
Traditional English offerings of Scotch broth, roast chicken with tongue, plum pudding and Eton Mess were offered at this dinner hosted by the Dowager Queen Alexandra just two weeks into her widowhood following the death of her husband, King Edward VII.
This dinner took place at Buckingham Palace only two days after her husband's funeral when Queen Alexandra, now the Dowager Queen, played hostess to an array of royals from across Europe who had arrived to attend the state funeral and pay Queen Alexandra their condolences.
At this dinner the Dowager Queen hosted her sister, the Tsarina (Dowager Empress) Maria Fyodorovna of Russia, along with the Emperor of Germany who had been staying at Buckingham Palace for the funeral; and her daughter and son-in-law, the Princess Royal and the Duke of Fife.
The menu card is embossed with the dual cipher of Queen Alexandra and her late husband which intertwines the letter ‘A” for Alexandra with “E” for her late husband Edward VII.
